Flashlights for the 21st Century There's been an explosion in hand-held lighting technology in the last few years. For example, recent improvements in LED efficiency has allowed LED output to surpass that of the standard incandescent bulb. It's now at the level of the halogen bulb & getting close to that of the florescent bulb. Batteries, too, are lasting longer, while rechargeables store more energy than ever.
It is hard for me to compare the lights from one manufacturer to those of another. Some manufacturers rate the output of these flashlights in lumens & some rate it in candlepower. One candlepower equals 12.6 lumens when you are measuring at 1 foot. This is what most companies use. The notable exception is Mag Lite which measures their candle power at 10 feet. That means that a Mag light rated at 30,000 candle power is putting out a lot of light.
These tiny powerhouses put out a lot more light than the old, two-D-cell flashlights most of us still have in the junk drawer.
The days of the lights going out, groping around in the dark to dig out your old flashlight, then discovering that the batteries are dead are, thankfully, long gone! |
