I don't think there is any better way to experience the outdoors than in a Bivy, especially if the weather is nasty. You sit there, all dry and warm and watch the nasty sleet and hail and dreck go by! I love em!
There are two classes of bivies: the 3 season ones with breathable, water-proof polyurethane coating or a polyurethane coated rainfly; the 4 season bivies made of Gore-tex or a similar fabric.
The high tech, four-season, bivies will be warmer inside. Testing shows that an increase in temperature is achieved inside a sealed bivy bag. For example, a test w/an external temperature reading of -20º C. showed a recorded temperature around the head of a sleeper using a bivy of -1º C. Another test used a 2-person, single-skin tent w/an ambient temperature outside the tent of -26º C. & inside the tent of -18º C. The temperature increased to -11º C. around the head of sleepers using Outdoor Designs version of Gore-Tex.
Don't even consider a bivy made of plastic. You can get the same effect as a plastic bivy by sitting in a bathtub at home and turning on the water.
